During our visit to Pineridge S.D. to record the memories of the Elders, regarding the Treaties, we found one family helping us understand their culture. Arlette Loud Hawk was 14 years old, when the shootout at Wounded Knee happened in 1975.

I'm touched by this, by the tone, by the pace... I grew up in France, where I could never understand, why the Indians in westerns were always the bad guys, like targets at the fair ground... while all I saw was communion, with nature, with the elements, and the evil of the white man, destroying everything that was alive and beautiful... So when I finally came to this country to stay, to live, to work for world change, I set out to do what I could... I drove through reservations in the mid-70s... where just because I looked like a white kid, young angry Native Americans would try to drive me off the road... for fun, for no other reason... I came to understand why... those who know me, know what I did... know what I am doing... I may never earn the respect... but in my heart, I'm trying to set it right. Free Peltier!
